Αρχικά χτίστηκε ως μαυσωλείο του Αυτοκράτορα Αδριανού (135-139 μ.Χ.). Αργότερα μετατράπηκε σε φρούριο των Παπών. Συνδέεται με το Βατικανό μέσω της μυστικής διάβασης Passetto di Borgo.
